So why ?

A question that has been asked over the years by many people including Norman Pace while I was playing in the studio for Sky is -

“Where does your nickname come from?”

Aside from one person postulating that it may be a result of dyslexia, no one has ever guessed, well now my friends I shall reveal all.

Let us rewind time back to 1995 and the release of the film “Assassins” staring Sly Stallone & Antonio Banderas, a typical flick from Richard Donner involving the cat and mouse game between possibly the top two assassins in the world.  Banderas’ character was far better even though he was technically number 2 on the list, the character was named “Miguel Bain”

Now, let us skip forward a couple of years to 1999 and the release of a “Mod” for a groundbreaking pc game entitled “Half Life”, it was called “Counter-Strike” & it brought a new era to first person shooters in the fact it presented sophisticated team work to an otherwise free for all death match universe.  It went on to secure an exceedingly popular retail release that spanned many versions and it was after a couple of years I started to play at a national league level, the alias I chose was “Bain”, in fact my full clan id was “[EEV]Bain” (Expect Extreme Violence).

I decide upon Bain not only because the character was a cool assassin but also because it would serve to temper my ego (yes even modest old me can suffer from ego) as being 2nd best it would remind me that no matter how good I got, and I got pretty good, there was always the possibility of meeting a player superior to me.  It saved me from arrogance and complacency taking hold & I would continue to practice and learn all the time.

Shimmy on some more years to my first adventures in online poker and I wished to use the same alias that had been so good and inspirational for me.  However, the first site I tried would only accept an alias of 5 to 10 characters !!  Hence the extra “N” was added and “Bainn” was born & other than “Bain74″ or “BainUK”, it has been my poker id for years.

Deity, Magic Bean or Nothing ??

Live poker in comparison to the version which allows you to play in the comfort of your underwear, is awash with information that may help you make the most from the cash session or tournament that you’re endeavouring to win.  Tradtional physical tells such as someone freezing when bluffing as their limbic system tries not to draw the attention of a predator or the double “snap” as a player looks at their hole cards which suggests neither card is worthy enough to take interest in.  Appearance and land of birth are possible indicators of playing tendencies, a young italian chap will have nothing 90% of the time he is betting & the older (ie, he knew Moses) gentleman from Birmingham will only 4bet+ with Aces.
From my observations, I feel we can also include a player’s religious slant to provide further insight to the style of their play.
Catholic
———-
Catholics, immersed in the concept of original sin, have happily taken to the perceived sinful pokerlife but are in fact polarised like a decent players hand range.  The first type who rely on the crutch of the confessional to cleanse them of their impropriorities, bluff with consunmate ease & in fact seem the happiest and most talkative while doing so.  The other branch of our catholic brethren, fearful of eternal damnation will only play honestly at the table.  They have nothing so a check is the way to go, if the lord has seen fit to bless them with a monster they will bet it all the way.
Jewish
——–
A studious people with a knack for mathematics, those who follow Judaism seem to have a natural talent for cash games and employ the style known as “small ball”, wisely investing their chips/money to extract maximum value whilst minimizing any potential loss.  Expect them to grow their stacks in a slow and barely perceivable manner.
Buddhist
———–
Seeking enlightenement by freeing themselves of sufferering & the need to crave corpreal things/pleasures seems at odds with the very concept of the game of poker but you will find them from time to time sitting at your table with a blissed out smile upon their lips calmy limping into pots, allowing the course of nature and karma to flow and will not impose their will on others by bluffing or raising.  Strangely, Buddhists are the ones most likely to “Tilt” you at the table as experiencing such insane calm & happiness in another human being, especially as they not seem to mind losing, is enough to drive anyone mad.  Just ask those who have played Andy Black.
Totemism
————
The practitioners of totemism will be immediately obvious at your table for they will have some token or trinket to which they have attributed mystical, wondrous and strange powers to, which they think will skew the mathematics of the game into their favour, the “lucky” chip/photo/rock/cuddly toy/can of beer will often be fondled during hands where they have a marginal hand that may be the best at that time.  It will also be placed firmly on their cards during a bluff.
Atheism
———-
Ok, admittedly this is not a religion per se but due to the sheer number of people accepting it’s doctrine these days and enjoying pointing out how “Wrong” the other religions are, it may as well be.  Followers of atheism will not believe anything at the table (or life) until they have seen it with their own eyes  & are therefore natural calling stations who will call pretty light all the time, so do not bluff them. EVER.
Jedisim
———
Jedi practitioners are adept at influencing the minds of their opponents through eloquent speech and subtle tricks of the mind and will use the needs and wants, the negative and positive forces that are in control of the opponent they are facing at the time.  Jedi’s will talk seldom but when they do it will be poignant and usually accompanied by a hand gesture such as the slight sweeping across of the hand -
This is not the pot you want to win.”

“Raise or raise not, there is no limp.”

Grand National

Ah, it’s the punters favourite time of year, the race that literally any nag can win, the Grand National.  Apparently the favourite has only won the damn thing 11 times in the past 100 years.

:O

Anyway, I do not normally bet on the horses but this year I had to when the name “BallaBriggs” grabbed my attention, but some sense took over & rather than slam a tonne on one nag, I picked a couple -

Winner winner chicken dinner ???

Go on BallaBriggS !!!!
